I'm going to say right off the bat that I am not actually too heated about this, I just thought it might be interesting to talk about if you're willing. If this is getting on your nerves just say so and I will never ask you about your Tsumugi take again. After all we are in the end just strangers chatting about a game :) ( I am so sorry to flood your inbox but now I'm committed to this so. Ignore the others if you want to! Also this is old news but I couldn't send for a few days so here I go.)

I would like to point out that Tsumugi, in canon, shares similarities with Hifumi (fiction>reality & fandom active). They were both played off as just weebs, except for Tsumugi's masterminding. Canonically, Hifumi would be as likely to be a gross creepy fan as Tsumugi- but obviously, thats dumb as shit and he deserves better. The thing im having difficulty understanding is why you would disregard canon's nonsense when it concerns Hifumi, but emphasize that aspect in your perception of Tsumugi.

If the masterminding is what villifies her, I could bring up Junko again or point to the ambiguity of the mm role- between V3's convoluted 'none of it was real!' and your clear apathy towards strict canon (which i totally support), I do not see a reason you wouldnt apply similar logic to that you used on the other characters I mentioned to Tsumugi instead of writing her off as a gross fujoshi or whatever. Im not trying to make you like her, but it seems unfair to reduce her to the worst possible traits she could have when you have expanded on and humanized so many other dr characters. first off no need to apologize! i love discussion & dialogue and you bring up some good points! it's true i haven't talked about her in a very positive light on my blog, and that i've reduced her publicly. i HAVE done a lot of thinking about her and i agree that like.. i haven't expressed it on my blog as much as i have in private GKDSKGDS and mainly that's because like...i just don't think she's interesting. yes, she's complicated like any other dr character but she just...doesn't interest me. like, hifumi interests me because of the fanon him vs the canon him and how they differ rather strikingly.

however for tsumugi like...i can't really see a disconnect other than some people making her Only Evil and Only Ever Evil when in reality she's...very much being hurt by danganronpa too and she doesn't really grasp the full consequences of her own actions bc of it being normalized etc in the world she grew up in + her fandom-y lens, and you're right, it's a LOT like how Hifumi sees things through his lens of his special interest but also. he had moments where you saw through that shit to his genuine self. tsumugi...doesn't get that.

which i understand is partially because of her whole ough im so plain schtick but also like. they do manage to make some background characters interesting! like rantaro! you don't learn a lot about him and he dies really quickly but he's still compelling and you WANT to learn more about him. tsumugi is just...painfully uninteresting.

and honestly? i think she was a shit mastermind choice. again i realize im a hypocrite coming from a standpoint of liking junko, but i really dont think she makes a good mastermind. which i know is part of the point of her being the mastermind in the first place, but much like a LOT of v3's overarching themes, it falls flat. it really feels there's no real compelling reason for her to enact this other than she likes danganronpa etc etc etc and that she's got Fandom Brainrot (like a lot of the fans). idk.

and on the junko point--even without me changing her for personal interest, junko was ALREADY an interesting character. That foundation is necessary. If i find tsumugi boring, i cant ever expand upon her because it will always be boring to me, yknow?

and like again like...i DO try to see her as a fleshed out human--and i have tried to flesh her out. she's just...still uninteresting to me. and im sorry if it seemed like i hadnt, i just dont really tend to talk in depth about the characters that i find uninteresting

Im old and independent..but I think my family friends and spouse would view me differently if I came out.. negatively.. ive been in the closet for like 15 years.. if you were in this situation, or maybe you have been, would you ever come out

Oh, angel, first of all I want to say that I'm so sorry you're in that situation; I can't imagine how anxiety inducing that all must be for you.

(Before you read this I want you to know, I'm not sure if what I'm saying will help you worth jack shit- I'm in an in-between of being in and out. I'm out privately, in publicly, so to speak.)

I'm not sure if you're speaking about your gender, sexuality, or both, but I guess that doesn't really matter in the long run (though if it's abt gender I would say maybe ask someone who is more publicly out than I am); I'm not going to ever be one to tell someone to come out if they feel unsafe doing so, or don't know that their support system could handle them, or if it would put them at emotional/fiscal/physical risk.

I can do my best to talk about my own experience, but I'm not sure how much I can offer other than speaking on what I've gone through.

I'm by no means an expert in these things so I'm wary of trying to give advice- I was blessed with an accepting family and support system, so even when I was ostracized from my community I had them, and I was outed at a young age so I was never in the closet long irt my sexuality.

Gender is...another story, I'm afraid, as I'm still publicly rather closeted - even when I'm dysphoric I make myself present fem because of expectations where I live/job opportunities. I'm out online, obviously, and was out in college, but since graduating I've been kind of re-closeted myself publicly for safety/jobs/etc.

I will say that irt sexuality...I'd never closet myself again. I know some people have been, uh, vocal, I guess, about how they feel about my realization of being bi instead of a lesbian, but I'd never in my life go back to denying that part of myself again, the part that loves women, as long as I can help it. I don't know how to describe it but it felt downright oppressive to myself to sit and pretend I didn't feel how I did; I was outed young but I tried damn hard after to pretend it was a phase and that tore me the hell up, yknow?

Freeing doesn't feel like the right word for it but it's all I can come up with right now - it was a relief. A painful one, at first, sure, but...I dunno, you ever been caught in a lie and yeah, it sucks, it's humiliating at best, but you don't have to keep your story straight anymore so you're kinda relieved? Like that.

It's not all perfect, obviously, I don't want to sugar coat it at all, but it's nice to not have to lie.

With gender it's...another story, I guess, for me - I live in the Bible belt, in rural Tennessee, so being openly gender non-conforming...there, I don't know if I'll ever be able to be out the way I'd like to be as long as I'm here, yknow?

It's situational, but...if I'm gonna give any advice I'd say if you want to come out, really *want* it, but are scared of how people will react, start small - if you have someone you care about who you feel like you can really, really trust, who you don't think will tell others if it goes bad, maybe ask them to sit with you for a talk.

I'm sorry I can't give actual advice, but my inbox and dms are always open if you need a listening ear.

And remember, it's never too late to come out - some people do when they're seven, some when they're seventy. You don't need to rush yourself. If you want to come out but it might not be safe, there's nothing wrong with taking the time to prepare for the worst case scenario.

What’s their opinion of violence? Clair: Clair’s main weapons include a kris dagger and a heavy tome, since he’s like, a (clairic) cleric. he’s uncomfortably good with any knife or scalpel, though, just from his history of medical Nonsense and picking up a few things here and there. he doesn’t particularly like violence, though he has a tendency to snap and not stop hurting people people until everyone around him is in some way gone/incapacitated/dead should things come to that. he’s not the most aware person when he gets upset :V 

Cassandra: Cassie has a singular pistol that got sent to her P.O. box as fanmail and she’s kept it ever since. It’s not really effective against, y’know, hordes of zombies at all, but it sure does shred living people if need be. she’s another one who doesn’t like real violence, citing it as disturbing and difficult to watch, but definitely wouldn’t turn down some good ol staged graphic stuff. Movies/video games/witing are fine. It’s just when it’s happening in front of her without the stage lighting is she hurt by it.

What topics are they defensive about? Clair: Clair is like, made of doubt. 100% of his existence is just him doubting his own experiences and what really happened to him to land him where he is. he gets pretty defensive over topics like friends/family, being super deeply afraid of people getting attached to him. whenever people prove to like him too much, he goes out of his way to betray them and fuck off somewhere where he doesn’t have to see them anymore. 

he’ll also totally overexplain and correct anything pertaining to zombie lore or psychology. but remember, he’s not an actual zombie. allegedly. clair is allegedly not a zombie. 

Cassandra: Cassie doesn’t really doubt much. like, she hit that ‘self aware that everything sucks and there’s not much she can actually do about it as an individual’ stage, and rather than having a breakdown over it, elected to just have fun with it, tormenting the citizens of Isolon with her nonsense and trying her best to make sure people are at least somewhat aware like she is. i feel like if there was anything she’d take super personally, it’d be anything pertaining to the fact Jules Is A Bad Guy (she has like. 9 powerpoints on this, probably. she makes a new one with new evidence every No Censorship Saturday and streams its creation). she’d throw hands with a jules supporter. fuck em up, babe!!

Sing : Do they like music? Do they listen often/sing/hum/play songs in their head?Clair: Clair doesn’t really seek out music, per se? but he’s never bothered by it if it’s playing. he’ll bop along and if it’s something he’s heard before it’s definitely been quietly sung before. if you ask him to sing in front of other people you will definitely die, though. figuratively and literally. 

he’d never tell anyone without some extreme emotional compromise, but he used to play piano and was learning the harp before he died.

Cassandra: Cassie ran out of lofi/royalty free/meme songs for the CasCast(tm) on like, day 931, and decided she’d try her hand at making some of her own!! she has. limited success. but she’s trying and that’s what counts. She’s probably responsible for there being a refurbished karaoke machine in Tim’s bar because like, the world ended, who the fuck cares. she’s a music fan and old memes and is trying to bring back rickrolling in 2069. (this may be an excuse to add canonical rickrolling in SO. maybe.)

Is there something they would be ashamed of? Clair: i think clair’s most notable bad habit is that his idea of like... coping with anything is just. putting it off. he don’t have time for feelings. hes an apathetic lil bitch. but in that same vein he doesn’t really feel like.. shame, per se? because like. he hasn’t really done anything hes just mad all the time lol

First and foremost I'm really sorry you went through such a dark time in your life. Depression is debilitating and even though you may have worked through that specific moment, it's still a battle. I'm proud of you and I hope each morning you wake up with positive energy.

What really annoys me is when someone says, something is or was a lesson yet they never learn from it. Clearly he hasn't made that effort to learn about why someone doesn't text back straight away. not with any of those mentioned above, though i think her relationships with miranda and jack in 2 are a little… not adversarial, but shepard is wary of them as much as she likes them. miranda for obvious reasons, and jack because she genuinely likes her after a while but being around her for so long is a bit of a drain on her energy, since she kind of reminds her of the kids from her old gangs. zaeed she definitely has a love/hate relationship with in 2, in that she appreciates his talks and advice but doesn’t appreciate his attitude and volatile unpredictability.

lmfao I HAVE A LOT OF THOUGHTS ABOUT SHEPARD ON SOCIAL MEDIA OKAY YOU SHOULD NOT HAVE ASKED ME THIS, it’s not that she’s very tech savvy (though there’s some proficiency with hacking) just growing up as a teenager on earth who stole/resold a lot of omnitools and translators and laptops, she had very few other pasttimes when cash wasn’t coming in. i think she was really into social media during ict training with other candidates, as a way of bonding and non-physical de-stressing. and she obviously knows a lot of online slang and shitty corners of the internet from her teenage days. in the alliance she goes through periods of activity followed by periods of forgetting about the internet at all, like when she’s on missions.

by me1, she’s established enough that i think she’s convinced herself a commander shouldn’t post on social media, that’s not appropriate, blah blah. so for a while she’s mostly quiet with only occasional funny but nonoffensive comments on things like pop culture or whatever. then after the battle of the citadel she gets a huuuuge influx of followers, and she’s like ??? cause she doesn’t use her space twitter much, so she kinda posts once like "hey thanks for the support, look out for my album coming out next spring” and everybody loves it, until she starts talking about the reapers publicly and preparing for war, then everybody’s like “god shut up i thought you were cool” so she gets angry when it becomes apparent that most people just want a figurehead, not her to actually say anything, but she can’t go back to making jokes and pretending things are normal, so she stops posting altogether. maybe like, once or twice more about something irrelevant, and then three weeks later she’s dead. (and then her crew like garrus and tali in particular waste so much time on the internet looking at her online profiles, rereading her last posts, hunting through years worth of her feed far back enough to see she was a different person once, both of them in mourning but garrus denying it)

and then me2 happens, and she’s obviously not thinking about social media for a while. when she does, it’s like maybe midway through the game, like maybe on illium kasumi drags her out to dinner cause she found authentic thai in the markets, and shepard’s just content enough to think “this is the kind of meal you post a picture about and share on social media” and she considers it before remembering oh yeah i was dead……. is my account even still there? how weird would it be to suddenly post out of nowhere again? i know the rumor is i was just under cover, but would it help or hurt the war to treat this like normal? and she basically overanalyzes and decides not to say anything at all. (in reality i think after she died her account was given the space equivalent of a twitter verification, like Yes This Was The Real Shepard’s Account, Tweets Might Be Recorded, which she only discovers after she logs in on a whim back on the ship). i don’t think she breaks this social media fast until she either uses it one day because she 1) completely forgets she was avoiding it, like she just wakes up randomly and types “i had the weirdest fuckin dream let me tell yall about it” because she’s still half asleep and convinces herself it’s a good idea, then goes back to sleep and wakes up to a million notifications like “i KNEW YOU WERE BACK!!” and “SOMEONE HACKED SHEPARD’S ACCOUNT THAT’S DISGRACEFUL” and she’s like oh boy. OR 2) she gets so heated over something stupid (that is definitely about human pop culture) that she completely forgets/doesnt give a rat’s ass anymore about maintaining silence online. like “I JUST HEARD SPACE BEYONCE WASN’T NOMINATED FOR A GRAMMY LAST YEAR. WHAT THE FUCK?” after the collector base, she feels a little more freedom to be funny and has the time to engage and post about pop culture again, so she gains some attention back for that

by me3, coming out of alliance-imposed isolation, i think she takes back to the internet whenever she can, for better or worse, but because most of the news she swallows is so awful, she tries to be positive and reach out to people who @ her, like she doesn’t want to lie to them, but she tries to signal boost official evacuation and relocation efforts and stuff. when the alliance starts gaining allies, there’s a little bit of expectation for her to use her accounts as a political “so honored the turian hierarchy is joining us” blah blah kind of tweet, so she’s kind of like…. well people deserve to know we’ve made an accord, but i’m gonna do it my way, and she essentially starts sharing all the stuff that’s happening on the citadel that might get easily lost in translation, like

just like, very honest, frank statements or clarifications that might not otherwise get out there, with an emphasis on trying to keep morale as high as reasonably possible. it’s not classified info, but she wants people to stay informed, like she wants people across the galaxy being bombarded who think they’ve been abandoned to know that she’s still fighting for them everywhere she can. even though she’s feeling really dejected and pessimistic sometimes i think she’s determined to make other people believe they can win even when she isn’t sure herself.

post-war (AHHA YOU THOUGHT I WAS DONE AFTER ME3, DIDNT YOU) as soon as she can travel, she kind of shoves her way into politics via reconstruction efforts despite her unstable health because she’s terrified everything will just go back to normal and the underprivileged people in slums and terminus colonies will be ignored. i think she keeps up the informative trend of letting people know what’s going on, like explaining what this or that emergency bill that was just passed by the council means, ‘cause she’s still new to politics and honesty all this dense language would’ve definitely confused her too. eventually as things start getting more settled she feels less guilty posting about how her day’s going. and then at one point, there is definitely a collective internet freakout when shepard acknowledges/makes a joke about one of the memes about her, and she’s like “what, you guys think i never go online or something?? i was a teenager once, i know how the internet works!” (she actually doesn’t spend that much time in forums or the like, she just learned about the meme from garrus and vega.)

(and then at some point post-war garrus, who used to have a dumbass video game let’s play account that gained a ton of popularity after me1 when shepard found out about it and asked to play turian call of duty with him on it (the vid was entitled “i play turian call of duty with commander shepard (my co)” and was mostly just them horsing around and then it went viral, but he took it down after she died and then purged the whole account/his entire online presence when he went to omega. but anyway a while post-war garrus comes to her like “hey you remember that video we made” “i remember the jokes about it” “well uh, i just managed to fix this old console i found at a flea market, do you want to do it again? yknow just kill time and lift people’s spirits?” so he makes a new account and introduces her to a lot of other games, she’s good at space overwatch but then when she gets cocky he makes her play like turian dark souls or some shit, and they record and post it online for kicks too)

mostly i dont think she lets herself think about whether she’s a “good” person because emotionally, and morally, she doesn’t feel much different than she was when she was committing crimes for a living (though she knows logically she’s grown a lot, she convinced herself back then that she was justified in doing bad things by just trying to survive, which is… not entirely too different from now). anyway she still feels like she’s trying to make up for who she used to be, like she wants to put more good into the world than the harm she once contributed to, or failing that, she can at least remove as much of the evil in the galaxy as she can. (i keep forgetting to clarify, she didn’t just do petty theft and break-ins and lookouts and illegal reselling, she was occasionally a debt collector and beat people near to the point of death with biotics, and she hated it but it was mostly out of sympathy that she insisted on going instead of another gangster because if it were anyone else she knows they might’ve dismembered or tortured the person too.)

god i still haven’t answered your question. ive been writing for a full hour, keely. the long and short of it is that i think she’s morally gray. i call her paragade for a reason. she tries really hard to be a good person to make up for who she was (who she “had” to be), so she fights to save every life she can, but against enemies that show no remorse or whatnot, some of her old habits of ruthlessness and reluctance to forgive die hard.
